Injectable fillers such as Restylane and Perlane are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body. These gel-like substances are used to fill in wrinkles that occur from gravity and sun damage, primarily in the lower face. Fillers are also frequently used to plump up deflated lips and fill out depressions around the eyes.
Injectable fillers are administered in the office under topical or local anesthesia with minimal discomfort. There may be temporary bruising and swelling that lasts a few days. Results are instantaneous and can last six to twelve months.
