Brow Lift

Overview

With age and the effects of gravity, the skin of the forehead wrinkles and the eyebrows descend, creating the appearance of excess skin along the upper eyelids and eliminating the arched eyebrow that is consistent with youth. A brow lift restores a more youthful brow position and improves forehead wrinkles without creating an unnatural “surprised” look.

Procedures typically performed in conjunction with a brow lift include facelift and eyelid surgery. Botox can also be used in conjunction with a brow lift to soften the “frown lines” between the eyebrows.

Candidates

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your brow area—whether it be creases across the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows, or a low brow position—a brow lift may be right for you. Dr. Sewell will speak with you, discuss your desired results, and help you determine if you are a candidate.

The Operation

Brow lifts are typically performed under general anesthesia or sedation on an outpatient basis and take about one to one and a half hours to perform. Tiny incisions are made behind the hairline, the forehead skin is smoothed and lifted, and the brows are restored to a more youthful position. A brow lift is very often combined with upper and/or lower eyelid surgery in order to completely rejuvenate the upper face.

Recovery

The healing process is gradual and the amount of time it takes to recover from brow lift surgery varies from patient to patient. Sutures are removed within a week of the surgery. Most patients have temporary bruising and swelling but can return to work in one to two weeks. More strenuous activities are encouraged in three to four weeks. Complete resolution of swelling can take three months or so.

Risks

As with any type of surgical procedure, there are some risks involved with brow lift surgery. Potential complications may include infection, bleeding, numbness, asymmetry, and incomplete results.
